History of the island

.

Archaeological excavations are still taking place in Thassos. They discovered a large number of finds from the prehistoric period to the early Christian years and prove the continuous inhabitation of the island. This was due to the fertile soil, plenty of water, the amount of wood suitable for shipbuilding and the strategic location in the Thracian Sea.

Philological sources state that in the period from 1600 to 1500 BC, the Phoenicians settled on the island. At the beginning of the first millennium BC, they were pushed out by the Thracian tribes, who took over from the Phoenicians their experience of knowledge about shipbuilding, gold mining, as well as their culture.

In the period from the 6th to the 4th century. BC, Thassos was renamed "Athens of the North". In ancient times, it was one of the most densely populated islands. Gold coins were minted here, later also silver and bronze coins. Ships from Thassos sailed to Egypt, Crete and Phenicia.

Populations from all parts of Greece came to the island, and the wealthy Thassosans established settlements on the opposite mainland, known as the "Continent of Thassos." Despite resistance, in the years 464 - 406 BC Thassos was ruled by Athens, later it was subordinated to Philip II. Macedonian. Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Bulgarians and, since 1455, Turks gradually took over the government of the island.

As a gift from Sultan Mahmud, it belonged between 1841 and 1902 to the Egyptian King Muhammad Ali, who was born in Kavala and survived his childhood in Thassos. On October 10, 1912, during the Balkan War, Thassos was annexed to Greece.
